The North Face Endurance Challenge 9-Day Race + Paracas Beach + Machu Picchu Adventure

Run in Peru will take care of all of your logistics, accommodations (excluding 1st night in Lima), translation barriers (if apply), many of the meals, and create a hassle-free experience for you in Peru, so that you can simply enjoy a combination of running, a post-race beach adventure in the National Reserve of Paracas, and explore the Sacred Valley of the Incas, Machu Picchu—a complete adventure designed for the runners soul.

This adventure will start in Lima, Peru, and end in Cusco, Peru.

THE RACE

Friday, TBD, 2020 (Miraflores, Lima): Meet & Greet fellow racers, Healthy Carb-Load Dinner, Race Entry Pack collection, and general race overview & guidelines.

Saturday, TBD, 2020 (Pachacamac): Race Day! Participate in any of these four races (logistics will depend on what race you are participating in):

  • 80K: 00:00 am Start Time / +4200m Elevation / Est. Race Time 9hrs-15hrs
  • 50K: 3:00 am Start Time /. +2700m Elevation / Est. Race Time 5hrs – 11hrs
  • 21K: 6:30 am Start Time / +1100m Elevation / Est. Race Time 2hrs – 5:30hrs
  • 10K: 7:30 am Start Time / +400m Elevation / Est. Race Time 45m-2hrs

A farm-fresh celebratory lunch will follow the race, and we will head to Paracas National Reserve, 2.5 hours South of Pachacamac.

PARACAS NATIONAL RESERVE

First, Saturday night will not disappoint, get ready to hit up Paracas beach town nightlife. We will then have 3 more exciting days of the following activities:

    • Dune buggy thrill ride and sandboarding down sand dunes in the Paracas National Reserve desert, in what feels like the middle of nowhere
    • Paragliding over the ocean and endless sand dunes
    • Visit and tour a pisco vineyard, learn how to make pisco and enjoy a Peruvian dish cooked in the ground, pisco included, after the tour (Incan traditions)
    • Take a speed boat trip around the Paracas National Reserve visiting one of the world’s largest colony of Humboldt penguins and sea lions
    • Stand Up Paddle-board on the Pacific Ocean
    • Tour the National Reserve with me – no giant tour buses, I swear!
    • Optional run along the boardwalk 
    • We will have a BBQ, dinner in town, and free time for everyone to do their own thing as well.

We will head back to Lima, and you will need to take a flight to Cusco in the evening of TBD (flight not included).

CUSCO – SALKANTAY  TREK – MACHU PICCHU

The next 4 days will be spent, in the center of the Ancient Incan Empire:

    • Touring the Cusco City Center, and ancient ruins and archaeological sites: Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puca Pucara and Tambomacha, learning about Peru’s culture and history.
    • Hike 37km of the Salkantay Trek for over 2 full days including one night of camping, covering the majority of the the total Salkantay trail by foot.
    • Take a guided tour and then enjoy the day at Machu Picchu– the New Seventh Wonder of the World and Peruvian Historical Sanctuary– with an optional add-on to hike Waynapichu if you reserve a spot early enough, as the hike is subject to availability.

This is our most complete type of package, including the race, Paracas, and Machu Picchu. I highly recommend this package as a complete 9-day hassle-free way to fully experience Peru through a variety of experiences, organized by a runner, for fun active people that like to explore.

PARACAS

  1. Day 1: Friday TBD, 2020 Meet & Greet Pre-Race Dinner in Lima

    Meet and Greet in Miraflores, Lima with other racers. We will distribute Race Entry Kits, review race information, and eat a nice healthy carb load dinner, ideal for the evening before a race.

  2. Day 2: Saturday TBD, 2019 Race Day! Pachacamac, Peru and travel to Paracas

    We will meet in Miraflores, Lima at varying times to head to Pachacamac where the race will be held. 50k and 80k racers will leave during the night, and 10k, and 21k will leave early Saturday morning.  Then, of course, we will enjoy the big RACE, followed by a Peruvian celebratory lunch at a local farm-fresh eco-lodge with fellow runners.

    After lunch, we will head to Paracas, and keep the night going out in town at the local pizzeria.  Saturday night can finish with a little dancing, only if your legs permit!

  3. Day 3: Sunday TBD, 2020 Paddle Boards, Paragliding and Scallops in Paracas

    First day in Paracas National Reserve! After breakfast we will head to the reserve with Stand-Up Paddle Boards.  Order the freshest scallops you will ever taste, strait from the ocean, and even watch them getting made!

    In the afternoon, we will paraglide over the sand dunes, a once in a lifetime opportunity. You will be tandem, so no need to get nervous!

    Explore the town at night, dinner is on your own!

  4. Day 4: Monday TBD, 2020 Penguins, Sea Lions, and Sandboarding in Paracas

    Today we will visit the Ballestas Islands, known as the “Galapagos” of Peru, especially famous for the world’s largest population of Humboldt penguins and sea lions. This speed boat trip is a bit on the tourist side, but cannot be skipped, it is a must do in Paracas.

    In the afternoon, get ready for a sandboarding adventure you will never forget! We will fly across the national desert on Dune Buggies, catching some air over the hills, and try our best to master the art of sandboarding. Obviously, no experience needed prior, and if you are not having any luck, just enjoy going down the hills on your stomach! We will go to a remote oasis, far from any other tourists, so you will really have a unique experience!

    At night, we will have a BBQ at home, and enjoy our last night together in Paracas!

  5. Day 5: Tuesday TBD, 2020 Pisco Distillery, traditional lunch, and return to Lima

    We will start the morning with an optional 8k run along the boardwalk of Paracas. 

    Lunch will be at a local Pisco distillery in Pisco, Peru, where we will tour and learn about how to make pisco. Of course, there will be some pisco tasting, and a local cooked Peruvian dish, Pachamanca, traditionally cooked underground.

    After lunch, we will head back 2.5 hrs to Lima, returning to Miraflores, no later than 7pm, and you will continue on the the airport to catch your flight to Cusco.

    In Cusco, transportation will be arranged to take you to the hotel for the night.

  6. Day 6: Wednesday, TBD, 2020 Cusco City tour and Wondering the town

    After breakfast, there will be a Cusco City tour in the morning. Walk the streets of Cusco and visit 4 megalithic archaeological sites: Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puca Pucara and Tambomacha. 

    Free afternoon to shop and wonder Cusco.

  7. Day 7: Thursday, TBD, 2020 Salkantay Trek Hiking and Camping

    Today we begin our 3-day Salkantay Trek towards Machu Picchu.

    Get picked up at 3am and head out to Soraypampa, passing through Mollepata along the way for breakfast.

    Today we will hike 21km from Soraypampa to Chaullay, crossing the Salkantay Trek’s highest point, Abra Salkantay at 4,650m / 15,200ft, overlooking Panaramic views of the high Andes.

    Tonight  our local guide  will prepare dinner around  the campfire, setup our tents and let us rest for tomorrow’s  trek.

  8. Day 8: Friday, TBD, 2020 Salkantay Trek Day 2, High Jungle Hiking to Aguas Calientes

    We will awake to  breakfast at the campsite and head on a 5hr hike through high jungle terrain to Sahuallaco.

    We will have lunch in Santa Teresa, and have some free time if anyone wants to visit Cocalmayo hot springs. 

    In the afternoon, we will  continue  our hike, treking about 3 more hours to Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu. We will dine and sleep in Aguas Calientes

  9. Day 9: Saturday, TBD, 2020 Machu Picchu: The Incan Empire

    For ambitious runners and travelers,  there is an option to wake early  and hike Waynapichu, which is highly recommended. It is a steep hike but offers one of the most rewarding views of Machu Picchu. It is an extra 20usd,  to be  payed on site and subject to availability (Waynapichu only offers 400 entrances/day, so let us know when you purchase if you are interested!).

    You chose if you want to bus  or hike into Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes. We will  meet at the entrance for our guided tour of Machu Picchu, the ancient Incan Empire. You will have free  time to explore on your own this New Seventh Wonder of the World (2007), taking it in all its rich beauty and history.

    Late lunch on own in Aguas Calientes, and will train back  to Ollantaytambo and then transport will be awaiting to take us back to Cusco, arriving no later than 10:30pm.

Accommodations

Included:

(3) Nights Accommodation are included in Paracas. at a big house, 1 block from the ocean

Here we will BBQ, eat breakfast each morning, and chill out.  Feel free to cook and make yourself at home.  There is a pool, and a few different room accommodations.

(3) Nights Accommodation are included in Cusco: (2) nights in Cusco City, (1) camping along the Salkantay Trek, and (1) in Aguas Calientes, near the base of Machu Picchu.

Within the cost, accommodations are included with the assumption that rooms may be shared, individual rooms may have additional costs, depending on occupancy.  Please write in comments at checkout if you would prefer to pay extra to stay in a private room, or email me and I can send an a quote estimating how much the additional fees would cost, which can be paid upon arrival.

Not included

(1) Night in Lima (Friday, March 28th) before the Race is NOT included.  I recommend to stay in Miraflores, as we will be leaving for the race from Miraflores.

  • If you are racing in the 50k, or 80k and prefer to camp the night before, we can help arrange this at the base of the race.  The North Face offers an area to camp in if racers bring their own camping equipment. Renting camping gear can be arranged, please mention at checkout, or email me that you are interested and I will send you a quote.
