Upcoming Mountain Trail Races

The Andes Mountains make Peru the paradise for trail runners. The  Andes are majestic, and powerful.  They are the second highest mountain range in the world.  They steal your heart, and but relinquish your soul.  No matter where you chose to run in the Andes, your experience will be forever changed.  But before deciding where to go, you should understand the different regions and sections of the Andes that are run:

  1. Ancash/Huaraz Region, famous for its Cordillera Blanca Mountain Range, the trails in this region could arguably be the most beautiful trail runs Peru has to offer (or in my bias opinion, that the world has to offer). These races requiere travel overnight, as they are 8 hours from Lima, to arrive to Huaraz. But don’t worry, Peru has amazing buses.  These races are in high altitude, starting near 3,200m/10,500 ft and some races reaching as high as 4,900m/16,000 ft. These races require at least two days to acclimate, but are are worth every short breathe of air you’ve  got.  These are the races that change your  life.  See:

Also in the Cordillera Blanca (Huayhuash) mountain range of the Andes, many people claim this race to be their favorite in Peru, especially the 30k and 50k which run to lookouts over Laguna 69, and other crystal blue lakes. Additionally, camps are set up, and local meals prepared for a full race adventure.

Sierra Andina Mountain Trail | August 8-9, 2020

 

The Last race of 2020 in the Cordillera Blanca. Presented by Columbia, Sierra Andina Mountain Trail is for advanced runners, offering only 45k (1-day) and 80k (2-day + camp) world class routes. All runners will race through the Santa Cruz trail, across the crystal lakes and leave you breathless in the high altitude!

Sierra Andina Chavín Trail | May 30, 2020

 

A truly gorgeous race through Peruvian history. Presented by Columbia, all runners will race 45km from Olleros, Ancash to the pre-incan temple of Chavin, along the Cordillera Blanca/Huayhuash mountains. The race is not super technical, but is at high altitude.

The North Face Ultra Trail Cordillera Blanca | June 29, 2020

 

The Cordillera Blanca is known internationally as one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world. This race takes place over a holiday weekend in Peru, and is characterized by local festivals in the city of Huaraz, Ancash. Race organized by The North Face, and offers a variety of distances for all levels.

Huarochiri and Lima Region The Huarochiri region of Lima, has a beautiful mountain range of the Andes, without the need to travel a long distance from Lima. All races within the Desafio Huarochiri series can be reached within a few hours’ car ride, and typically only require one-night stay (2night max, depending on altitude). This area is also unknown to tourists, you will see what local Andean life is really like without outside influence.  Marcahuasi Ultra Trail is also in the high Huarochiri region of Lima, and encompasses running through a mystical, extraordinary energy-filled plateau. All Huarochiri races are beautiful weekend races, only 2-3 days max.  The races typically  start at an altitude around 3,000m/9,800ft, which does not affect most runners too much, but none the less require acclimating and proper preparation.  Other Lima races include The North Face Endurance Challenge, just an hour south of Lima, in Pachacamac, an ancient pre-Incan civilization in the Lurin Valley, famous for its vertical challenges without any altitude, a great race for non-altitude loving runners!  Lastly, Lomas de Lachay race is only a few hours from Lima, and does include mountain trails along the run, but also incorporates desert, and jungle trail within the same race, so you will see this race in various categories, and is also at  low altitude.  Lima/Huarochiri races include:

A few hours outside of Lima, Cocachacra is a small Andean mountain community of no more than 2,500 habitants. The area is gorgeous, and the run is tough, but very enjoyable. You will see experience what local life is like in the Andes, a true Peruvian experience

Desafio Huarochiri 2 | June 7, 2020

 

Just a few hour drive from Lima, is the second race in 2020 taking place in the Andes of the Huarochiri region. This race will be at higher altitude than the first Huarochiri, starting around 2,800m, but you can expect endless views, mountain trails and small town experiences.

Desafio Huarochiri 3 | August 9, 2020

 

The last Huarochiri trail race of 2020, just a few hours outside of Lima, in the rural mountain town of San Mateo, in the Andes. Starting at nearly 3,200m elevation, the race requires at least a full day of acclimating prior. Experience the Andes, without traveling too far from Lima, it’s a beautiful trip!

Marcahuasi Ultra Trail | September 26-27, 2020

 

The toughest and most gratifying race in the Huarochiri region, a few hours from Lima. All routes from 16k to 90k of MUT will take you through large stone formations over 10,000 years old, and the remains of a pre-incan ruins believed to have miraculous healing energies.

The North Face Endurance Challenge | March 28, 2020

 

The North Face challenges your power to climb. Only an hour away from Lima, runners will take on elevation gains from +400m (10k) to +4200m (80k), depending on the race. Lomas de Lachay Andes Race | October 10, 2020

 

Lomas de Lachay is the most geographically diverse race offered. It is a very unique experience that allows runners to race through jungle terrain, desert sand, and mountain trails all within 10 or 22 kilometers! Conveniently, the race is just a 4 hour drive from Lima.
