Arguably one of Peru’s best trail runs to date. Sponsered by Columbia, this race is located high in the footpaths of Chavin de Huantar, the ancient prehistoric capital high in the Cordillera Blanca mountain range near Huaraz, Ancash. The Chavin culture outdates the more well-known Incas and is said to be the “mother” of Peruvian culture. This 45k trail, often referred to as the “llama trek” will take runners through the ancient trail passing by relics and ruins unique to this civilization along the way. The course goes through Punta Yanashallah mountain pass at 4,700m (15,420ft above sea level), so altitude acclimation is necessary prior. Despite its high altitude, and comparted to other trails in the Cordillera Blanca, this course is known for its gradual inclines, smooth paths and unique topography. This mountain trail is absolutely gorgeous, it is not very technical, and is fun and intimate with a 60 participant max for 2020. The highlight of the race is finishing at the famous ruins of Chavín de Huantar, the center of the ancient Chavin Civilization.
