Desafio Huarochiri 2 Race Details

The second of three independent Huarochiri mountain races of 2020, the Desafio Huarochiri will take place in Langa(located 2,789m/9,150ft  above sea level) and Lahuaytambo (located 3,286m/10,780ft above sea level) in Huarochiri, Peru. Locals in these small Andean towns cultivate corn, potatoes, wheat and beans. The routes are unique the history behind them.  Runners will be crossing some trails originally constructed in pre-Incan times by the Qhapaq Ñan people.  These trails later became vital for the Incas to transfer messages back and forth from Xauxa to Pachacamac, Peru. In 1991, Lahuaytambo was declared a historic monument of Peru, for its importance during the Incan Empire. Both races are substantially higher altitude than Desafio Huarochiri 1, None the less, the altitude is typically manageable enough with one full day’s acclimation.

This race offers two distances for runners: distance Purix, meaning “Traveler”, and distance Chaski, meaning “Incan messenger” in the Andean language, Quechua.  Both male and female first place racers in the Chaski distance qualify to the Skyrunner World Series in October-November 2020 in Europe.

• 1st place female and male qualify to Skyrunner World Series

Nearby, racers can explore more incredible trails commonly crossed by the Incas and visit the local Ayuantambo Ruins.  Apart from the beautiful trail, this race has a lot of history and cultural experiences to offer.
