Marcona Wind Trail 10-Day Race + Paracas Beach + Machu Picchu Adventure

Friday, October 23 – Sunday, November 1, 2020

This 10-day adventure includes (3) parts, complete adventure designed for the runners soul: 

  1. Participate in the Marcona Wind Trail race through the remote national desert along the Pacific coast of Peru, 
  2. Enjoy an incredible post-race beach vacation in the Paracas National Reserve, and 
  3. Tour Cusco, hike the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu, and explore the ancient Incan Empire.

Run in Peru takes care of all the logistics, accommodations, (most) meals, translation barriers (if they apply), and creates a hassle-free experience for you in Peru, so that you can simply run and enjoy the Marcona Wind Trail, enjoy a post-race Paracas adventure, and trek among ancient routes of the Incas.  The entire package is made especially for runners by a runner: for those who like to explore new places, follow their passion and leave the logistics and planning behind.

This adventure will start in Lima, Peru, and end in Cusco, Peru.

THE RACE (Oct. 23-25)

Marcona National Reserve is located 7 hours south of Lima.  We will road trip down from Lima, and explore the rural mining town of 20,000 inhabitants in San Juan de Marcona.  We will participate in the race, enjoy a post-race beach party, explore Marcona wildlife, and even enjoy a post-race Pisco Distillery tour the next day!  All participants are welcome to run in any of the following races:

  • 10K: 8:30 am Start Time / +80m (262ft) Elevation / Start at Playa de Leones, Marcona
  • 21K: 9:00 am Start Time / +119m (390ft), -464m (-1,522ft) Elevation Gain,Loss / Start at Marcona Wind Farm
  • 42K: 8:00 am Start Time / +577m (1,893ft) Elevation / Start at Playa de Leones, Marcona / UTMB® 1 point
  • 65K: 7:50 am Start Time / +748m (2,454ft) Elevation / Start at Playa de Leones, Marcona /  UTMB® 2 points 
  • 100K: 3:00 am Start Time / +1,287m (4,222ft), -1,496 (4,908ft) Elevation Gain,Loss / Start at Peaje Marcona /  UTMB® 4 points

PARACAS NATIONAL RESERVE  (Oct. 25-28)

We will have (4) exciting days to relax, and of the following activities:

  • Dune buggy thrill ride and sandboarding down sand dunes in the Paracas National Reserve desert, in what feels like the middle of nowhere
  • Paragliding over the ocean and endless sand dunes
  • Stand Up Paddle-board on the Pacific Ocean
  • Tour the National Reserve with me – no giant tour buses, swear!
  • Optional 8k Run along Paracas Boardwalk or Sunset Yoga  
  • Wonder the streets of Paracas Town
  • We will have a BBQdinner in town at the reggae pizzeria, and free time for everyone to do their own thing as well.

We will head back to Lima, and you will need to take a flight to Cusco in the evening  (after 9pm) of Oct. 28th (flight not included

CUSCO – SALKANTAY  TREK – MACHU PICCHU  (Oct. 28 – Nov 1)

The next 4 days will be spent, in the center of the Ancient Incan Empire:

  • Touring the Cusco City Center, and ancient ruins and archaeological sites: Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puca Pucara and Tambomacha, learning about Peru’s culture and history. 
  • Hike 37km of the Salkantay Trek for over2 full days including one night of camping, covering the majority of the total Salkantay trail by foot.
  • Take a guided tour and then enjoy the day at Machu Picchu– the New Seventh Wonder of the World and Peruvian Historical Sanctuary– with an optional add-on to hike Waynapichu if you reserve a spot early enough, as the hike is subject to availability.

This is our most complete type of package, including the race, Paracas, and Machu Picchu. I highly recommend this package as a complete 9-day hassle free way to fully experience Peru.

  1. Day 1: Friday, Oct. 23, 2020 Road trip to Marcona

    We will leave from Miraflores at 7:30am, stopping for snacks. We will have lunch along the way and arrive in Marcona by early afternoon.

    Spend the afternoon exploring the small mining town of 20,000 inhabitants, and see what a non-tourist rural Peruvian coastal town is like.

    We will have a carb dinner in preparation for the race!

  2. Day 2: Saturday, Oct. 24, 2020 Race Day!

    Today everyone races! Race day logistics will depend on which race each runner will be participating in (10k, 21k, 42k, 65, or 100k).  All races start between 3am and 9am.  Get prepared for the race of a lifetime, you will be running in a national reserve, along the coast of Peru, the sights are spectacular. 

    The race will finish at Playa de Leones, Marcona, where the post race festival will begin.  You can jump in the ocean to cool down or simply dance in  your bare feet on the sand. There will be ceviche and local food and drink stands around to purchase what you want.

    After we will continue with a group dinner, and see where the night takes us!  

  3. Day 3: Sunday, Oct. 25, 2020 Marcona Wildlife, Pisco Tour, and Paracas Arrival

    We will start the day on a tour into Marcona National Reserve to see the wildlife.

    After we will tour a Pisco Distillery where we will learn how Peruvian Pisco is made.  We will have a nice traditional Peruvian lunch. 

    After lunch, we will head to Paracas, and keep the night going out in town at the local reggae pizzeria

  4. Day 4: Monday Oct. 26, 2020 The National Reserve, Paragliding and Fresh Scallops

    First day in Paracas National Reserve! After breakfast we will head to the reserve, visiting key landmarks and points of interest along the way.  We will head to Intimar for lunch, where you can Order the freshest scallops you will ever taste, strait from the ocean, and even watch them getting made!

    In the afternoon, we will paraglide over the sand dunes: a once in a lifetime opportunity. You will be tandem, so no need to get nervous!

    Explore the town at night, dinner is on your own!

  5. Day 5: Tuesday Oct. 27, 2020 Sandboarding, Dune Buggies, Hammocks and Yoga

    After lunch, we will head to Paracas, and keep the night going out in town at the local reggae pizzeria

    After breakfast at the house, we will jump on a sandboarding adventure you will never forget! We will fly across the national desert on Dune Buggies, catching some air over the hills, and try our best to master the art of sandboarding. Obviously, no experience needed, and if you are not having any luck, just enjoy going down the hills on your stomach! We will go to a remote oasis, far from any other tourists, so you will really have a unique experience.

    We will have lunch at a special point in Paracas  known  for sports enthusiasts. You can watch kite surfers on the  water, and chill by the pool and on hammocks 

    There will be an optional 8k sunset run or Yoga Session in the late afternoon.

  6. Day 6: Wednesday Oct. 28, 2020 Standup Paddle Boards, return to Lima, fly to Cusco

    This morning we will take the Stand Up Paddle Board across the Paracas Bay. 

    We will pack our things, grab some lunch at a local spot, and have some time to explore around Paracas Town before we head back 3 hrs to Lima, returning to Miraflores, no later than 7pm.

    Upon  arriving to Miraflores, you will continue on to the airport to fly to Cusco. (this flight  is not included  in price, and  must be purchased separately) 

    In Cusco, transportation will be arranged to take you to the hotel for the night.

  7. Day 7: Thursday, Oct. 29, 2020 Cusco City tour and Wondering the town

    After breakfast, there will be a Cusco City  tour  in the morning. Walk the streets of Cusco and visit 4 megalithic archaeological sites: Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puca Pucara and Tambomacha.  

    Free afternoon to shop and wonder Cusco.

  8. Day 8: Friday, Oct. 30, 2020 Salkantay Trek Hiking and Camping

    Today we begin our 3-day Salkantay  Trek towards Machu Picchu.

    Get picked up at 3am and head out to  Soraypampa, passing through Mollepata along the way for breakfast.

    Today we will hike 21km from Soraypampa to Chaullay, crossing the Salkantay Trek’s highest point, Abra Salkantay at 4,650m / 15,200ft, overlooking Panaramic views of the high Andes. 

    Tonight  our  local guide  will prepare dinner around  the campfire, setup our tents and let us rest for tomorrow’s  trek. 

  9. Day 9: Saturday, Oct. 31, 2020 Salkantay Trek Day 2, High Jungle Hiking to Aguas Calientes

    We will awake to  breakfast at the campsite and head  on a 5hr hike through high jungle terrain to Sahuallaco.  

    We will have lunch in Santa Teresa, and  have some free time if anyone wants to visit Cocalmayo hot springs.  

    In the afternoon, we will  continue  our hike, treking about 3 more hours to Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu.

  10. Day 10: Sunday, Nov. 1, 2020 Machu Picchu: The Incan Empire

    For ambitious runners and travelers,  there is an option to wake early  and hike Waynapichu, which is highly recommended. It is a steep hike but offers one of the most rewarding views of Machu Picchu. It is an extra 20usd,  to be  payed on site and subject to availability (Waynapichu only offers 400  entrances/day, so let us know when you purchase if you are interested!).

    You chose if you want to  bus  or hike into Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes. We will  meet at the entrance for our guided tour of Machu Picchu,  the ancient Incan Empire.  You  will have free  time to explore on your own this New Seventh Wonder of the World (2007), taking in all its rich beauty and history.

    Late lunch on own in Aguas Calientes, and will train back  to Ollantaytambo and then transport will be awaiting to take us back to Cusco, arriving no later than 10:30pm.

Accommodations

(9) Nights Accommodation are included: 

  • (2) nights in Marcona (at a simple hostel, limited by options available), and 
  • (3) nights in Paracas at a big house, 1/2 block from the ocean
    • Here we will BBQ, eat breakfast each morning, and chill out.  Feel free to cook and make yourself at home.  There is a pool, and a few different room accommodations.
  • (4) Nights in  Cusco: (2) Nights in Cusco City, (1) night camping on the Salkantay trek and (1) Night in Aguas Calientes at the base of Machu Picchu

All accommodations are included with the assumption of double occupancy. In Paracas, there may be up to 3 sharing a room depending  on group size. Please write in comments if you would prefer to pay extra to stay in a private room, and we can do our best to accommodate, additional costs apply.  

If group is smaller than (4) runners, we may have to switch homes in Paracas, we ask you for flexibility when booking, we will be in touch and let you know if there are any changes.
